June, Horses, and the Art of Growth

June is a month of expansion.

The days are longer. The grass is greener. The world around us seems to come alive with possibility. In Montana, June often means spending more time outdoors, feeling the warmth of the sun on our skin, and witnessing nature in full bloom.

Yet growth is not always obvious.

Sometimes growth looks like learning to trust again after betrayal. Sometimes it looks like setting boundaries after years of people-pleasing. Sometimes it looks like allowing yourself to feel grief, anxiety, or sadness rather than pushing those emotions away.

This is where equine-assisted psychotherapy offers something truly unique.

Horses Understand What Words Cannot

Many of us have become experts at explaining our emotions while remaining disconnected from actually feeling them.

We can tell others we are "fine" while our shoulders remain tense, our breathing shallow, and our nervous system stuck in survival mode.

Horses do not respond to our words. They respond to what is happening beneath them.

As prey animals, horses are highly attuned to body language, energy, tension, and emotional congruence. They notice when our outward presentation does not match our internal experience. In many ways, they become mirrors for our nervous systems.

When a horse steps away, moves closer, softens, or becomes alert, they are often responding to something we may not yet be aware of ourselves.

June Invites Us Back Into Our Bodies

The summer months naturally draw us outdoors and into the present moment. We feel the breeze, hear birds singing, and notice the scent of fresh-cut hay or blooming flowers.

Equine therapy invites us into this same mindfulness.

Instead of sitting in an office discussing emotions, clients have the opportunity to experience them in real time. They learn to notice their breathing, recognize tension, regulate their nervous systems, and build authentic connections with both themselves and the horses.

Many clients are surprised to discover that healing does not always happen through insight alone. Sometimes healing happens through experience.

A horse standing quietly beside you can communicate safety in ways words never could.

Lessons From the Herd

One of the greatest gifts horses offer is honest feedback.

Horses do not judge. They do not care about job titles, social status, appearance, or achievements. They respond to authenticity.

In the arena, clients often discover patterns that show up in their everyday lives:

  • Difficulty setting boundaries

  • Fear of rejection

  • A need to control outcomes

  • Challenges with trust

  • Anxiety around vulnerability

  • A tendency to care for others while neglecting themselves

The herd has a remarkable way of bringing these patterns into awareness without criticism or shame.

With support and guidance, clients can begin experimenting with new ways of relating, communicating, and regulating themselves.

Growth Happens at the Edge of Comfort

June reminds us that growth takes time.

No flower blooms overnight. No horse learns trust in a single interaction. Healing follows a similar path.

The process often involves patience, curiosity, and a willingness to stay present with discomfort long enough for something new to emerge.

In equine-assisted psychotherapy, we are not trying to "fix" people. We are creating opportunities for connection, awareness, and healing.

The horse becomes a partner in that process.

A Season for Healing

As we move through June, consider what growth might look like in your own life.

Perhaps it means slowing down.

Perhaps it means reconnecting with your body.

Perhaps it means exploring therapy in a way that feels more experiential, grounded, and connected to nature.

The horses remind us that healing is not about becoming someone different. It is about returning to who we have always been beneath the stress, trauma, expectations, and survival strategies.

Just like the long days of June, healing often unfolds gradually—one moment of connection, one breath, and one step at a time.
