October: Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Finding Safety, Strength, and Healing Through Horses

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to recognize survivors and victims of domestic violence, raise awareness, and remind those experiencing abuse that they are not alone.

For many survivors, healing is not a straight path. It can take time to rebuild confidence, trust, and a sense of safety. Animals—especially horses—can sometimes become an important part of that journey.

The Healing Power of Horses

Horses respond to our body language, emotions, and presence. Working with them can encourage patience, confidence, communication, and trust. Grooming a horse, leading them through an obstacle, or simply spending quiet time together can provide a peaceful space where a person can reconnect with themselves.

For survivors, equine-assisted activities may offer opportunities to:

  • Build confidence and self-esteem

  • Practice setting boundaries

  • Develop trust and healthy communication

  • Experience a sense of accomplishment

  • Find connection and companionship

  • Spend time in a safe, supportive environment

Most importantly, horses do not judge. They meet us where we are.

You Are Not Alone

Domestic violence can affect people of every age, background, and community. Abuse can be physical, emotional, sexual, financial, or psychological. Responsibility for abuse always belongs to the person choosing to use it—not the person experiencing it.

This October, let’s use our equine community to create spaces where people feel respected, supported, and safe. A kind conversation, a listening ear, or simply knowing someone cares can make a difference.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, confidential help is available through the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233, by texting START to 88788, or through their online resources.

This Month, We Stand Together

Whether you are riding, grooming, volunteering, teaching, or simply spending time with your horse, remember that healing can happen one quiet moment at a time.

There is strength in asking for help. There is courage in choosing safety. And there is hope for a life beyond abuse.

October is a time to listen, learn, support survivors, and help build a community where everyone—two-legged and four-legged—can feel safe.
