The Healing Herd
When Healing Means Slowing Down
This summer looked a little different for me.
As someone who finds so much joy, purpose, and connection through horses, not being able to ride was difficult. There were moments when I felt frustrated that my body wasn't allowing me to do what I wanted to do.
But this season taught me something important:
Healing doesn't always mean getting back to what we were doing before. Sometimes, healing means learning to be present with where we are right now.
I had to listen to my body.
I had to slow down.
And I had to let go of the idea that I needed to do something with the horses for the experience to be meaningful.
Instead, I spent time simply being around them.
Grooming.
Watching.
Standing quietly beside them.
Breathing.
And I was reminded once again why horses are such incredible partners in healing.
🐎 The Horses Don't Ask Us to Perform
Horses aren't interested in whether we've checked everything off our list.
They don't care if we're productive.
They don't expect us to have it all together.
They simply respond to what is happening in the present moment.
When we are tense, they notice.
When we are rushing, they notice.
When we settle our bodies and take a breath, they notice that too.
That creates an incredible opportunity to slow down and become aware of what is happening inside of us.
Sometimes the most powerful work isn't riding.
Sometimes it is standing beside a horse and realizing:
"I can breathe here."
🌿 Your Health Is Part of Your Healing
I often remind clients that we cannot separate our emotional wellbeing from our physical wellbeing.
Our bodies communicate with us constantly.
Fatigue.
Tension.
Pain.
Restlessness.
Overwhelm.
Sometimes our bodies are asking us to stop long before our minds are willing to listen.
This summer, I had to practice what I encourage others to do:
Listen to your body before it forces you to listen.
Rest isn't failure.
Slowing down isn't weakness.
Changing your plans isn't giving up.
Sometimes it is exactly what allows us to heal.
🐴 A Moment With the Herd
This month, I invite you to spend a few quiet moments with a horse—or simply outside in nature.
You don't need an agenda.
You don't need to accomplish anything.
Just notice.
What happens in your body when you slow down?
Where do you feel tension?
Where do you feel calm?
Does your breathing change?
What happens when you stop trying to fix, accomplish, or control—and simply allow yourself to be present?
These small moments of awareness can become powerful opportunities for regulation and connection.
🤍 A Reminder From the Herd
This summer, the horses reminded me that I don't have to be doing something to be worthy of being there.
Neither do you.
Your worth isn't measured by your productivity.
Your healing doesn't have to happen on someone else's timeline.
And taking care of yourself isn't selfish.
Sometimes the most courageous thing we can do is slow down enough to hear what our body has been saying all along.
The horses will still be there.
And sometimes, simply being near them is enough.
